Abstract

School diplomas, marriage certificates, a 1917 passport, a 1930 issue of The Crisis, correspondence, memorial statements, and photographs taken by both Daniel Freeman and Scurlock studios. There are also many materials related to the 1944 publication of James F. Bundy, 1862-1914: a Biography, by Charles M. Thomas. The Freemans, Bundys, and Turners were prominent African American families, and the papers are a reflection of their inclusion in influential circles in Washington, D.C. Family members represented include James F. Bundy (1862-1914); Delilia Freeman Bundy (d. 1955); Della Bundy Turner (1891-1972); Zenobia Miller Bundy (1903-1930); Daniel Freeman (1868-1927); Harriet Freeman (d. 1950); James Freeman; and Sarah Freeman Wilson (d. 1957).

Addison N. Scurlock (June 19, 1883 – December 16, 1964) was an American photographer, founder of The Scurlock Studio, and businessman who became prominent in the early and mid-20th century for photographing Black Washington. The first Scurlock Studio opened in 1904 on S Street in Northwest D.C., which was his parents' home. In 1906, the family and studio moved to Florida Avenue.
